Fabulous cover by miss_zedem

The origin of this ficverse is rather simple, for once. I wanted to know how Jack changed from the happy-go-flirty conman in Doctor Who to the brooding mna-of-mystery in Torchwood. That's it. That's all I wanted to do. But things are never quite that simple.

I started writing during Season 1 of Torchwood (around November 2006), when we knew almost nothing, but I'm pleased to say that this is nearly in-line with canon. I may eventually go back and change the one detail that isn't, but otherwise just pretend you didn't notice.

Along the way, I created some original characters to keep him company and who have now taken on lives of their own; I've had fun, tantrums, tears and everything in between; I've made some really good friends; and I've had fanfic written about my fanfic, which flabberghasts me more than I can say. There are also some fantastic drawings of the characters here and here by idle_myrmidon.

I've taken on a challenge table for these characters, which can be found here.

Below are all the links to all the stories. Comments, concrit and comeback are always appreciated, no matter how old the story is.

Series:

The Waiting Years Covering 1953-1970. Jack gets a job, makes a friend and finds something more. (6 stories)

The Wandering Years Covering 1970-1990. Jack's travelling the world, but who is he running away from? (9 stories)

The Watching Years (Stuck in Production Hell) Covering 1990-present. Everything's changing, including Jack.

Timestamp fics for these series:
Bridgend
1 year before "The Waiting Years I: Lost and Found". Even Jack can take a hint. (~370 words)
and
Personal Space
2 months after "The Waiting Years II: Shangri-La". Has Jack met his match? (~840 words)

Stand-alone stories:

Moonrise
Written for tardis_bigbang and hosted at that site. Includes art by the wonderful matsujo9 and _medley_

Five ways Jack came to the rescue (and one way someone rescued him) Spans 1954-2004, with guest appearances from various supporting characters. (~7,500 words)
And
Timestamp ficlets for this story:
Flowers
1 week after "Kiss (Auckland, 1989)" Of course, Jack had sent flowers. (~400 words)
and
A Friendly Game
A few hours after "Coffee (Torchwood House, Scotland, 1954)" That gentle twitch, the slightest quirk of thin lips was definitely a smile. (366 words)

Snookered Just a friendly game of snooker, but when it's Jack playing, anything can happen. (set between "Shangri-La" and "The Shape of Things"; ~2,500 words)
and
One month later: Quicksilver. In the past six months, Jack has done his best to turn their lives upside down, and Hugh has started to forget that most people don't have a larger than life American secret agent in their lives.

The First Time
Because travels_in_time wanted to know what happened the first time Hugh saw Jack 'come back'. (Set between "Shangri-La" and "The Shape of Things"; ~1,700 words)

Taking His Leave
[written for fandom_me's birthday] Jack and Marion, saying goodbye. Technically a missing scene from "The Waiting Years: Jack, the Weevil and Me" but makes sense on its own as well.

Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night)
A set of 4 ficlets inspired by miss_zedem's 'first kiss' meme. The Joneses know what they want, and how to get it. [Jack/Hugh/Marion; set between 'Shangri-La' and 'Snookered'; PG-13].

Stay With me
A set of 3 ficlets inspired by miss_zedem's 'fist kiss' meme. Somehow, Jack always manages to make things more complicated. [Jack/Hywel, Jack/Hugh/Marion; set after 'Las Vegas' and after 'Cardiff/Going to the Chapel'; PG-13/R]

Waiting
Drabble written for donutsweeper. Marion waits

Waiting for Tomorrow
Oh boy. I think you'd better read the author's notes for this one, but if you've never heard of the AU ouvretesyeux, it's not going to make a whole lot of sense.
In wartime London, Richard has a surprising encounter with a young Lance Corporal. (~4,000 words)
and
When Tomorrow Comes
For the Timestamp Meme. miss_zedem requested five minutes after 'Waiting for Tomorrow'
Just one simple phone call. (~900 words)

Tears of the Gods
He was the centre of a kaleidoscope, drenched in colour and sound so strong that it dazzled him, reflecting back and around in sequences of breathtaking beauty. (~1,300 words)

Other people's stories:

Never Doing That Again by crystalshard
This was the result of a slightly cracky conversation. It was decided by terrylj and nnwest that crack should be written, and crystalshard foolishly volunteered. It's definitely AU and is set during 'The Wandering Years' and current Torchwood.

In a minute, there is time by terrylj
A much more angsty look at events during "The Wandering Years". Setting is mid-1981.

Absent Friends by miss_zedem
Bringing the story right up to date, with Jack, Ianto and Marion.

Also inspired by the 'first kiss' meme, laurab1 wrote Tair Gwerin.

Nor all who wander lost by crystalshard
Eight snippets from Jack's past and future, tracking Jack's attachment to one particular family and how much they mean to him.

Just as an FYI- you haven't listed "Waiting" here yet.

are you going to write any stories about Jack in the 19th century? He landed in 1869 after all.

I haven't decided yet. When I started, we had no idea where Jack had been for the intervening period, so I left it open deliberately. If I do go back and write more, they won't really be part of this ficverse, which was always intended to chart his character progress more than anything.

Uh, that's the long answer. I guess the short answer is 'maybe' :)

I just blitzed through all of 'The Waiting Years' and 'The Wandering Years' in two days. Wow. I'm so deep into this universe now that I wish we could see this. You've done a brilliant job with these characters.

Now I'm off to read Moonrise. :D

Jack - JB Black and White

Wow. Two days? You probably know more about them than I do at this point! Thank you so much - these guys really LIVE in my head, and it's just the best feeling when they come alive for someone else.

Enjoy Moonrise, and thank you!

Well, it's not like I had anything else to do on the plane...

(of course, when I realized I'd converted the first part of Las Vegas twice, instead of both parts for iPod reading, it was almost painful, because that's not one I wanted to stop in the middle of...)

Jack - hand on chin

Thank you so much! I'm thinking of making The Watching Years my NaNoWriMo project, so hopefully it will be coming soon.

Really glad you enjoyed and thank you for commenting. :)

Torchwood Captain Jack

Sadly I've just finished reading the last story in this verse. It was a wonderful, wonderful journey. I love your Jack, and all the wonderful OC-s as well, especially Hugh. ♥
Thank you so much for sharing!
